How To Thrive In Your First Year of College

08.23.18 Uncategorized

Dear Rising College Freshman,

First, congratulations! Graduating high school is a crazy thing and essentially ushers you into your next journey of life: adulthood. Whether you are moving far away or staying local, college brings about many changes in your life. Personally, I am attending James Madison University and entering my senior year. There is a lot I have learned about myself through these three amazing years. There are a few things I believe that every freshman should know in order to thrive during your first year of college:

Place yourself on a schedule:

High school is much different than college. In high school, your schedule is set for you. Essentially with transportation that takes up 40 hours a week! In college, if you take a typical credit load that only adds up to 15 hours. What it boils down to is that you have so much free time on your hands. If you are not careful, you can end up wasting this time away! A good way around this is to put yourself on a set schedule. You can factor in professor’s office hours, study time, class, and of course time for some fun! Just being on a schedule and holding yourself accountable. This is my recipe for success.

Get to know your professors:

Don’t believe everything your high school teachers have told you about college professors. Sadly there are some professors that are rude and unbearable, but a lot of professors are really nice! That is why it is so important for you to get to know your professors. Most want to see their students thrive and succeed both inside and outside of the classroom. Some professors actually beg for students to come visit them during office hours. That is how much they want to help you in every way possible. Just always remember, a professor’s job is to help you succeed.

Meet as many people as possible:

College is just such a unique place, however everyone there has at least one thing in common: to advance their education. That is part of the reason it is a great idea to try to meet people not only in your dorm but also across majors and years. A great way people do this is by getting involved in various clubs, greek life, and/or volunteering. You will meet your greatest of friends this way and make lifelong connections that you will cherish forever.

It’s okay to take breaks:

The biggest thing for me is knowing when I need to relax. Especially during exam week or that final week before a massive project is due, it is very typical to see me more than stressed out. I have learned through my three years at JMU that I need to walk away and just take a few minutes to an hour break every once and awhile. For me at least, if I don’t walk away, I end up just getting frustrated. Just a few minutes is enough time to clear your head and allow yourself a fresh perspective on whatever the challenge is.

And finally……

Call your family:

They will appreciate this more than you can ever imagine. Plus, they may even send you care packages (which are the best).

I hope your first year is full of success, bliss, and memories. Don’t let your first year go to waste; enjoy every last minute.

Things You Miss The Most Once You Leave Central PA

08.10.18 Uncategorized

Central Pennsylvania, the place I proudly call my home. Back in 2015, I left the area for a mountain town in Virginia. Leaving was probably one of the hardest things I have ever done and I dearly miss my home. There are four key things I miss the most about Central PA:

Major cities are never far away- You cannot deny how nice it is to have Philadelphia less than 2 hours away, Baltimore 90 minutes away, and Pittsburgh roughly 3 ½ hours away.

Friends and family you leave behind- One of my favorite sayings is “Home is where the heart is”. Even though you may leave the area, your heart may still be planted in PA with your loved ones.

Our local favorites- We all have our favorite places; it could be a park, coffee shop, or even a little café. These places make it worth the trip back.

Memories that are associated with the area- Whoever said leaving the area was easy? It truly isn’t! That’s why the best part about leaving Central PA is coming back to make even more memories.

I cannot wait to move back in less than one year and continue my journey in Central PA.

5 Summer Fashion Trends You Don’t want to miss out on!

07.06.18 Uncategorized

Smocked Strapless Jumpsuit                                                                                Striped Cutout Halter Palazzo Jumpsuit

Forever 21 Smocked Strapless Jumpsuit                                                Forever 21 Striped Halter Palazzo Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are by far my favorite summer trend!! You can dress them up with cute accessories like jewelry, a trendy straw hat, and wedges, or you can dress them down with an updo, jacket, and sandals. Jumpsuits give you the best of both worlds because they are so comfy but also super stylish!

Envie Mustard Yellow Wrap Crop Top 5

Lulus Envie Mustard Yellow Wrap Crop Top

I LOVE this simple chic outfit from Lulus!! Yellow is the color of the summer, it radiates bright and happy vibes all around! The top could be worn with a denim skirt, jeans, flowy shorts, or even a maxi skirt. Don’t forget to spice it up with some accessories as well, the sandals and glasses in the picture add the perfect touch! This would be a great outfit for senior portraits because it would stand out perfectly against any background.

Pier Pleasure Red and White Striped Romper 5

Lulus Pier Pressure Red and White Striped Romper

Stripes and wrap dresses/rompers are another huge summer trend!! This romper will catch everyone’s eye with it’s unique style and would be perfect for any occasion! You could wear simple sandals or trendy wedges depending on the event and either would look great. It would also look stunning with some cute jewelry and a purse in hand!

Zaful Striped Wrap Cami Top With Shorts

Two-piece outfits are super in right now and there is no question why! This one in particular really caught my attention because it combines some of my favorite summer trends into one outfit (yellow, stripes, and wrap top). This would be the perfect outfit for a day at the beach, a picnic, day out in the city, and of course a photoshoot!!

Peyton Light-Wash Denim Overalls

Overalls are one of summer’s favorite trends!! There is so much you can do to style the perfect look with a pair of overalls. They give off a casual cute vibe and can be worn for many different occasions like a summer concert, a fair, and pretty much any outdoor event! You can wear a variety of different shirts underneath your overalls and just about anything will flow perfectly.
